Research Course

MBB 90r (Supervised Research on Topics in Mind Brain Behavior) is an individual research tutorial. You arrange the tutorial yourself, identifying a faculty member who will serve as your research supervisor for a project related to her/his research program. To identify labs or faculty, you may consult this website’s Research Opportunities section or contact Shawn Harriman in the Mind/Brain/Behavior office, faculty advisors in MBB tracks, and the MBB Board of Faculty Advisors.

To enroll in the course, you should complete an application (linked from the bottom of this page) and submit it by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29th for the fall or 5 p.m. on Monday, November 13th for the spring. Also by the deadline, please add the course to your Crimson Cart, requesting instructor's permission to enroll. Our faculty will then review your application and we will let you know the decision; if the application is approved, we will also get you instructor's permission in your Crimson Cart by the end of course registration day (Thursday, August 31st or Wednesday, November 15th). MBB, not your research supervisor, will approve your Crimson Cart enrollment once your application has been approved. We are also willing to accept applications after the initial course registration deadline, as we know it can take some time to finalize details for research projects. Late applications will be accepted during the add/drop period, which ends Monday, October 10th in the fall and Tuesday, February 20th in the spring. For very late applications, keep in mind that we will need several days review time before the add/drop deadline.

Your work in this course will be determined by your research supervisor, and usually entails regular weekly hours in her/his laboratory or research program. You will be expected to e-mail a one-page progress report to the Shawn Harriman by Wednesday, November 1st or Wednesday, March 27th. At the end of the semester, you will submit a completed research report to your supervisor and to Shawn Harriman by Friday, December 8th or Wednesday, May 1st. The research report will be similar in length to a term paper and you should consult with your research supervisor to determine the content. Among the possibilities are a report summarizing your research (including any data analysis you may have done or any preliminary findings you have made), a literature review on a topic related to your research, or a draft paper for publication, or a detailed research proposal for a follow-up study.

Your course grade will be based on your work in the lab and on your written reports, and will be due from your research supervisor by Friday, December 15th or Wednesday, May 8th.

MBB 90r provides 4 units of course credit each semester taken. The MBB 90r course ID is 125466, the fall term class number is 12591, and the spring term class number is 12013. The divisional distribution is Social Sciences.
