Mind / Brain / Behavior -- Interfaculty Initiative at Harvard University

Summer Thesis Awards (for Summer 2012)

Each year MBB awards several Mary Gordon Roberts Fellowships to support summer thesis research. Applicants must be juniors in an MBB track or the MBB secondary field who will be conducting research this summer that will contribute to their senior honors thesis. Secondary field theses will only be considered if they are MBB in content. Funding is available for a combination of research, living expenses, and wages. Awards do not fund both living expenses and wages, and also do not fund travel between Cambridge (or elsewhere) and home. Recipients of Mary Gordon Roberts Fellowships who receive financial aid are also eligible for a Deans Summer Research Award to go toward their summer savings requirement.

Because MBB funds are limited, we recommend that students seeking to conduct summer thesis research pursue other funding possibilities as well, including support from your thesis advisor or her/his laboratory/research program and the Harvard College Research Program (HCRP). MBB coordinates its awards with HCRP and other Harvard funding sources, to prevent multiple awards for the same project and thus to maximize the number of projects we are able to support.

You use the same form to apply to both the Mary Gordon Roberts Fellowship and the HCRP award, the CARAT (Common Application for Research and Travel). Application instructions and forms can be found at http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k80947&pageid=icb.page444539.

If you are planning to apply for MBB and HCRP thesis support, please email shawn_harriman@harvard.edu by Monday, March 26th, so we know to be expecting your application.

The Mary Gordon Roberts Fellowship and HCRP application for summer 2012 will be due Wednesday, March 28th, at 5 p.m. In addition to what you must submit to the Student Employment Office for the HCRP award, you must also submit two hard copies of the complete application material (including recommendation) to MBB (Shawn Harriman, 284 William James Hall, 33 Kirkland Street). If your faculty advisor prefers, s/he may submit the recommendation via email to Shawn (by the 29th deadline).
