I study the sound systems of human language both from the perspective of how speech sounds are produced and perceived (phonetics) and the perspective of how they are structured in grammar (phonology). I direct the Phonetics and Phonology Lab (PhonLab) where we use a variety of techniques for exploring speech acoustics, articulation, and perception, as well as speech-accompanying gestures of the body ('co-speech gestures'). A current focus of our research is on modeling speech timing: how do speakers know when to speak, both at the level of articulation of speech sounds and at the level of conversational interaction? We take a cross-cultural approach to this question, examining data from typologically different languages and varied cultural contexts.
