Research Assistant Position: Psychopharmacology and Computational Neuroscience of Social Behavior in Non-Human Primates
Dr. Carlos R. Ponce, Ponce Lab, Department of Neurobiology, Harvard Medical School
fall 2025

The Ponce Lab studies how the primate visual brain processes complex naturalistic stimuli. Using electrophysiology, behavior, and deep learning models, we investigate how neurons across the visual cortex and related brain areas encode perception and behavior. Current projects span closed-loop neural optimization, social gaze analysis, and psychopharmacological manipulations to study brain and behavior. In our current project, we are developing a camera-based system to characterize the behavior of macaque monkeys under the influence of MDMA compared to control conditions. This project relies on deep learning models and unsupervised clustering algorithms to discover behavioral patterns and quantify drug effects on naturalistic behavior. **Responsibilities**: (1) Assisting with setting up and calibrating high-resolution video recording equipment; (2) collecting and managing video datasets of primate behavior; (3) implementing and testing computer vision pipelines for pose estimation and behavioral tracking; and (4) supporting analysis using unsupervised clustering and deep learning approaches. **Requirements and Expectations**: Background and/or clearly demonstrable interest in neuroscience, psychology, computer science. Strong interest in computational methods and behavior. Previous coding experience in Python or MATLAB. Familiarity with machine learning libraries is highly desirable. Attention to detail, reliability, and ability to work with animals. 10–15 hours per week expected during the semester (with possibility of summer/full-time engagement). **Additional Information**: Position can be paid or arranged for course credit. Work will be conducted in-person at Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA). Lab website is at <https://ponce.hms.harvard.edu/>. **To Apply**: Please send a CV/resume, a brief statement of interest, and contact information for one reference to Dr. Carlos Ponce at \[<carlos@hms.harvard.edu>\]. Use the subject line: RA Position – Behavioral Neuroscience and Deep Learning. (posted 9/25)
