Research Assistant Position: Visual Search during Endoscopic Surgical Procedures
Dr. Victoria Jacoby and Prof. Jeremy Wolfe, Visual Attention Lab, Mass General Brigham / Medical School
fall 2024

In the Visual Attention Lab, we investigate how we search for and locate objects in our environment. Visual search is involved in many everyday situations, such as looking for your phone in a cluttered living room, as well as in highly-specialized tasks, such as searching for a tumor in an x-ray. Using psychophysical and behavioral methods, our research aims to elucidate the processes underlying visual search and explain how and why clearly visible targets can be missed. Several lines of previous work have involved medical image perception, investigating how radiologists find or miss targets in 2D and 3D imagery. We are seeking a student to work with us on a new project studying search by surgeons performing endoscopic procedures. How effectively do they search for targets inside the human body. What strategies do they use and are some approaches more effective than others? **Responsibilities:** This is a new project. We are looking for a research assistant with the drive to help us develop the tools and procedures for this work. The RA can be involved in many aspects of the research process. This can involve assisting in the development of stimulus sets, programming and pilot testing of experiments, recruiting participants, data collection, and data analysis. **Requirements and Expectations:** We can discuss how much time you could realistically devote to this project. Previous research and/or programming experience is desired, but not required. Please include any relevant experience you may have in your cover letter. This position will involve engagement with real medical images and videos, including videos of surgical procedures; applicants should be comfortable viewing such content. It would also be helpful to have strong ‘people skills’ since interacting with surgeons and persuading them to participate is a significant task in this sort of work. This could be an interesting project for students interested in medical school and/or in basic behavioral research. **Additional information:** This position is available for course credit for the Fall 2024 semester. The lab is not based on campus and is located at 900 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02215 (corner of St Paul St). More information about the lab can be found at <https://search.bwh.harvard.edu/new/index.html>. This is an in-person position though some remote work may be possible. **How to Apply:** Interested students should email Victoria Jacoby (<vjacoby@bwh.harvard.edu>). Please include a copy of your CV and a cover letter in your email. (posted 8/2024)
