One of the defining characteristics of ASD is impairment in language and communication. Deficits in pragmatics, or the social uses of language are universal but deficits in other parts of language (phonology, semantics, syntax) are highly variable. In this presentation I will begin with a review the behavioral and neuroimaging research that has been conducted on language in older children and adults ASD as well as in their unaffected siblings. In the second part of the talk I will focus on new work on the developmental origins of atypical brain organization for language in infants at risk for ASD, and then end with research on the behavioral predictors of language outcomes.
