Internship: Advanced Signal Processing in Cortical Neurophysiology

Internship: Advanced Signal Processing in Cortical Neurophysiology
Prof. Sydney Cash, Cashlab, Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School
Summer 2019

The Cashlab in the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital has a volunteer internship position open for a student interested in obtaining experience in advanced human neurophysiology and translational research. We employ non-invasive measures of brain activity, structure, and connectivity patterns to identify biomarkers for epilepsy in brain networks. Specifically, our laboratory employs neurophysiological signal acquisition and processing to better understand the abnormal cortical processes underlying epilepsy, with an emphasis on using approaches which extract information at multiple scales and then combine them into a more complete and meaningful understanding of brain physiology. Duties: The student will help with acquisition and pre-processing of intra-cranial electroencephalogram (EEG) data in patient with epilepsy. Opportunities to propose and pursue an independent project using the data available. Students will participate in weekly epilepsy multidisciplinary conferences as well as lab meetings. Opportunities to shadow in epilepsy clinic also available for interested students. Requirements and Expectations: Full time hours. Concentrations in Neuroscience, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Psychology, or other Pre-Medical area required. Familiarity with MATLAB is a plus or will be gained through the internship experience. Additional Information: CashLab website at http://cashlab.mgh.harvard.edu/. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the largest and oldest academic hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. With over 75,000 admissions per year and ~1.5 million outpatient visits, MGH is a fertile setting for patient recruitment and clinical investigation. MGH has the largest-hospital based research program and an unparalled international reputation for research excellence. The MGH Neurology Department is a vibrant ensemble of approximately 250 faculty members involved in basic and translational research on a host of neurological disorders and neuroscientific problems. The Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology Service include 9 physician electroencephalographers, 7 fellows, and 2 research coordinators and participates in the care of over 4000 patients annually.
