I’m a philosopher. My research is on perception and consciousness, and their role in what we can know and in politics. My first book The Contents of Visual Experience (2010) defines a method we can use to test hypotheses about what kinds of things we can see: the method of phenomenal contrast. I use this method to argue that we can see much more than just color, shape, motion, illumination, and that beyond these features we can see causation, kinds, and personal identity. My second book The Rationality of Perception argues that perceptual experiences (the conscious aspects of perception) result from inferences in ways that have major implications for epistemology and politics. I’ve written on many topics in the philosophy of mind, epistemology, and politics.
