Research Assistant Position: Cerebrovascular Imaging in Aging and Dementia

Research Assistant Position: Cerebrovascular Imaging in Aging and Dementia
Dr. Meher Juttukonda, Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School
Fall 2021 – Spring 2022

The Brain Aging and Dementia (BAnD) Laboratory in the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging consists of multiple investigators using neuroimaging to understand how risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease affect brain structure and function. The Cerebrovascular Aging and Spin Labeling (CASL) Laboratory is a research group within BAnD that is focused specifically on how blood transport and oxygen availability to the brain is affected by aging and by risk factors for vascular and Alzheimer’s disease as well as how these hemodynamic changes impact cognitive function. Our lab is seeking a research assistant to support ongoing studies that involve the processing and analysis of physiological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in older adults. Responsibilities: Project responsibilities will be shaped by the student’s interests and will involve some combination of data management, image processing, computational modeling, and statistical analysis. Expectations and Requirements: The student will have the opportunity to learn broadly about biomedical research and topics relating to neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience. This position will be virtual (approx. 10 hours/week), although opportunities to perform in-person data acquisition may arise on occasion, depending on the student’s interests and compliance with hospital policies. Basic knowledge of physiology and signal processing are desired; experience in MATLAB, R, and/or shell scripting would be beneficial. Additional Information: The student will work closely with Dr. Meher Juttukonda during the internship but will also have opportunities to interact with other members of our research group and the research community at the Martinos Center. The student will also be invited to participate in weekly research meetings and virtual seminars through the Martinos Center BrainMap series. Currently, this is an unpaid position, but the student may be eligible to earn course credits. This position is well-suited for those interested in pursuing graduate training in neuroscience or neuroimaging.
