Research Assistant Position: Memory in Food-Caching Birds

Columbia University's Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute is looking for a highly motivated individual to fill the position of a Research Staff Assistant. The position is in a systems neuroscience lab that focuses on the mechanisms of memory in food-caching birds (black-capped chickadees and tufted titmice). Major responsibilities include maintaining a colony of birds at the institute, as well as field work at forest research stations to collect and transport the birds. Individuals with field work experience and passion for both the lab and the outdoors are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: (1) assisting in the management of a colony of small songbirds at the Institute, including behavioral observations, breeding, and maintenance of experimental animals; (2) regular trips to several field sites in the region around New York City to perform observations, maintain feeder stations, collect and transport animals; (3) supporting purchases and timely maintenance of experimental equipment and lab inventories; processing expenditures; assistance with experiments and other assignments deemed necessary by the Principal Investigator (PI); and (4) performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested. Requirements and Expectations: Minimum qualifications: (1) Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience in biology, ecology, or any related sciences; (2) experience with field work, preferably on birds (lease describe these qualifications in the cover letter); and (3) a valid driver's license and ability to take independent trips to forest sites. Preferred qualification: Prior experience with birds preferred. Other: The ideal candidate should possess sound independent judgement, collaborative spirit, and motivation to advance science both in the laboratory and in the field.
