Research Assistant Positions: Behavioral Neurobiology of Drosophila

Research Assistant Positions: Behavioral Neurobiology of Drosophila
Dr. Rachel Monyak and Dr. Edward Kravitz, Kravitz Laboratory, Medical School

fall 2022

Our laboratory uses genetic tools to explore the social behavior of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. While the focus in the past has been on aggression in male and female fruit flies, these studies have been expanded recently to include decision making, courtship, learning and memory and other aspects of behavior. We use genetic tools to find and manipulate the function of specific neurons (down to single cell levels) that are involved in these behaviors. Most recently we have begun using optogenetic methods to examine behavior in freely moving animals. Responsibilities: The RA will have her/his own project and will be expected to assist in routine running of the laboratory. Requirements and Expectations: Projects in our laboratory take as much time as RAs can offer us. The minimum would be 2-3 weekday afternoons and partial weekends and/or holidays as well. This would have to be discussed with Dr. Monyak and approved by Dr Kravitz. No previous experience with fruit flies is required. Additional Information: Our laboratory is at the Harvard Medical School. A shuttle bus runs from Harvard Square to the Medical School (the M2) on a frequent schedule daily (from Monday to Saturday). This can be a salaried position or can be one offered for academic credit. To Apply for Position: Contact Dr Rachel Monyak first (Rachel_Monyak@hms.harvard.edu) If you have any trouble reaching Dr Monyak, get in touch with Dr Edward Kravitz (Edward_Kravitz@hms.harvard.edu). A cv and letter of recommendation should be provided if available. (posted 9/2022)
